Lead engineer in Solar Decathlon 2013

When others designed posts, T-shirts and user interfaces, I designed the auto-control-and-monitor system, the high-efficiency solar system, and the soul of a real house. That is ETHO.

Solar Decathlon (SD) is an international program hosted by U.S. Department of Energy and China’s National Energy Administration, which challenges selected collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. Our house, ETHO, was the result of joint efforts by students from Peking University and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The soul of ETHO was to provide a more human-centered living experience, while meeting the public's growing need of energy conservation and environmental protection. As our targeted users were the contemporary people willing to obtain and send information via the web, we implemented a web-based system that monitored the temperature, water consumption and energy yield of the house, and controlled the appliances and lights through Wifi and IR. Besides, I designed a solar system that could cover the energy consumption of the whole house. SD was my memory as an engineer, and also my self-actualization as a designer.
